Dr Syed Mokbul Hussain


Dr Syed Mokbul Hussain was born in 1946 in the village Sundishail in Golapgonj of the district of Sylhet. He did B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. in History from Dhaka University, and subsequently obtained Ph. D. from the University of Calcutta. He actively participated in the Liberation War and after independence started his career as a bureaucrat. In 1975, he resigned as Deputy Secretary and started a new phase of life as a successful industrialist. Dr Hussain was elected Member of Parliament in 1986 as a independent candidate from Sylhet-6, but subsequently resigned his parliament membership in protest against the use of legislature as rubber stamp by the regime of General Ershad. Dr Hussain has once again been elected Member of Parliament as an independent candidate in Oct. 2001 parliamentary elections. Dr Hussain is the founder of five educational institutions in his area, viz., (i) Dr Syed Mokbul Hussain High School and College; (ii) Sajeda Parvin Hussain High School (wife); (iii) Syed Tanvir Hussain Academy (son); (iv) Syeda Adiba Hussain High School (daughter) and (v) Syeda Farhana Hussain High School (daughter-in-law). For poor and meritorious students he has also set up Dr Syed Mokbul Hussain Scholarship (Jamshed Ahmed High School, Bianibazar) and Sajeda Parvin Hussain Scholarship (Dr Syed Mokbul Hussain High School and College, Golapgonj) Till mid nineties Dr Hussain was a regular columnist and contributed articles in the national dailies including the Daily Observer and now defunct Daily Morning News. Dr Hussain has earned name and fame as a social worker and philanthropist.
